Camp Kaleidoscope Troutdale: A Hidden Gem in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area

Tucked away in the beautiful Fairwood Valley, surrounded by pastures and wooded hillsides, lies Grindstone Campground - a tranquil retreat within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Spanning 200,000 acres of national forest, this wilderness area is teeming with wildlife, offering endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to connect with nature.

The campground itself is situated at an elevation of 3,800 feet, surrounded by a mix of hardwoods, hemlock, and rhododendrons. With its picturesque setting, Grindstone Campground provides the perfect blend of comfort and seclusion for those seeking a peaceful getaway.

To ensure the protection of our forests, visitors are reminded to not move firewood from one location to another. This simple act can prevent the spread of tree-killing pests and help preserve the natural beauty of our national forests.

For campers, Grindstone offers 20 available sites in Opossum Hollow Loop on a first-come, first-served basis. Standard electric sites are equipped with 30-amp service and water hook-ups, while tent pads and picnic tables provide ample space for relaxation. Each site also features a fire ring with a cooking grate, lantern post, and tent pad.

Domestic pets are welcome at Grindstone Campground, as long as they are attended and kept on a leash no longer than six feet. However, please note that there is no dump station available on-site.

Unfortunately, due to maintenance needs, the campground will be partially closed for the 2024 season, with all campsites in Cottontail and Groundhog Den Loops being temporarily unavailable. Visitors are advised to check for updates before planning their trip.
